Congressman Brian Baird Should Apologize to Washingtonians Living in Israel

Written by: Aaron Katsman | February 22, 2009

As a former Washingtonian now living in Israel, I am deeply offended by the words of Congressman Brian Baird (D-3rd District Washington). The congressman was touring Gaza, not exactly Clark County, and just laid into Israeli security policy. After eating up all of the propaganda fed to him he had the gall to say, “It’s hard for anyone in our country to imagine how it must feel to have a sick child who needs urgent care or is receiving chemotherapy or dialysis, then be forced to take a needlessly lengthy route, walk rather than drive, and wait in lines as long as two hours simply to get to the hospital.  As a health care professional myself, I found this profoundly troubling, no, actually it’s beyond that, it is outrageous,” said Baird.”

Outrageous? No offense congressman but have you ever heard of terrorism? Maybe the reason Israel’s borders are closed is because every time they are opened our buses, cafes, and hotels get blown up by the very people you ’support’? If I am not mistaken, the reason Israel launched an offensive against Hamas, was because they were targeting Israeli civilian populations with missile attacks, non-stop. Ever hear of self-defense? Maybe it’s the fault of the Hamas, who stole relief aid, and who have done nothing for Gaza residents since they came to power? What about the mobile hospital that Israel built to care for injured Palestinians? Ever come into an Israeli hospital, Mr. Congressman? Well they are full of Palestinians both being tended to and working on staff. What do you have to say about that? I haven’t seen to many Jihadists working in the Providence Saint Peters Hospital, why not?

You go on to say, “If this had happened in our own country, there would be national outrage and an appeal for urgent assistance.  We are glad that the Obama administration acted quickly to send much needed funding for this effort but the arbitrary and unreasonable Israeli limitations on food and repair essentials is unacceptable and indefensible.  People, innocent children, women and non-combatants, are going without water, food and sanitation, while the things they so desperately need are sitting in trucks at the border, being denied permission to go in” said Baird and Ellison. ”

Really? After 9/11 I didn’t see you out there banging the drum to provide basic needs for Al-Qaeda? ‘if this happened in our own country…’ What? First of all you don’t have a sworn enemy living within US borders who wants to drive you into the sea, and if you did, you are telling me that after they started bombing your cities, you wouldn’t seek to put an end to the attacks? What a bunch of crap.

Congressman Baird, your district lies in some of the best fishing waters that exist. To borrow an anglers metaphor, it sounds like you swallowed the propaganda hook, line and sinker.

You owe Israel an apology.

Even Terrorism Can’t Derail The Israeli Shekel

In what could be seen as a sad reality, on the heels of today’s terror attack in the heart of Israel’s capital city of Jerusalem, the Israeli Shekel is rallying more than 1.5% against both the Euro and the US Dollar. It used to be that after a terror attack the Shekel would drop. Unfortunately, after years and years of living with terrorism, today’s attack which has left at least 4 innocent people dead and scores injured, has had no effect on the currency market. The shekel continues to be one of the strongest currencies in the world, even in the face of continued terrorism, missile attacks in the south, and the threat of some type of military conflict with Iran.

It’s a pretty sad state of affairs that we have become so anesthetized by terrorism that it makes virtually no impact in our lives.  We just continue on as if nothing has happened. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those that were killed, and we wish a speedy recovery to those injured.
