Tell us a little about yourself and your fund.
Abba Horwitz, Portfolio Manager: We started started Old School Partners in March of 1999.  Since then, we’ve compounded a net return to investors of around 19%.  We’re running the fund for the most part from Israel.  With a junior partner, I’m managing roughly $60 million.

What’s your philosophy?
AH: We focus primarily on the small to midcap world.  We apply a value approach.  Basically, we’re looking for two things.  We’re looking for value where there is a clear catalyst to unlock this value or cheap growth with value undiscovered, on the cusp of coming out.  Unfortunately, I’m not a big commodity buff and have not been riding this current wave.

Can you give us a couple of examples of some successes you’ve had? (Continue »)

Post bar-mitzvah, 3 better uses for ex-Comverse CEO’s money

Written by: Israel Investor Newsletter | June 12, 2008

The Wall Street Journal loves to poke fun at corporate execs living large on the lam. Kobi Alexander, Comverse’s (CMVT) Namibian-dwelling ex-CEO, is not spared any ribbing in today’s Page 1 of the WSJ (sub. required).

Seems that Mr Alexander put on a lavish bar mitzvah party for his son recently which included flying in over 200 guests from Israel and the U.S. and a gala performance by a IOI’s Aaron Katsman’s favorite hip-hop group, Subliminal.

If “Initiative 97″ makes it on the ballot in the fall, citizens of Seattle will be asked to approve a measure that would prohibit the city from investing its pension funds in corporations that benefit from the Iraq war, or companies that provide material support to the Israeli government within the so-called “occupied territories.” The opposition to the initiative is being led by StandWithUs.org. It strikes me as a bit odd that a measure that seems to be intended to protest the U.S. Iraq policy also includes divestment from Israel.

Why the connection?
