2008 good riddance to you,
All that’s left is a big IOU.
AIG, Freddie, Fannie, Lehman and Bear,
All you could do was wake up and swear.
Too big to fail was the rallying cry,
Hang on to your wallet, little guy.
CEO arrogance led to the end,
A few to jail we should send.
A $50 billion scheme was the cherry,
This time it’s the rich not merry.
So in with ‘09 some hope we need,
Yes we can, if not there is always weed.

Save the world, enough with crude,
Drill offshore now? hey, surf’s up, dude.
Warming planet, costly food,
Oil firms with attitude,
The ‘wakening has been quite rude.
“It’s our own fault”, we like to say,
Our cars, our wars, and our hairspray,
Now waves, wind, solar–are in play.
Renewables will save the day,
Drive SUVs? get locked away.
“But it’s just nature,” others cry,
We are not about to die.
There’s still ozone in the sky,
Temperatures are not so high,
They aim to tax both you and I.
Soon we’ll turn another page,
Global cooling they will gauge.
Environmentalists will rage,
“We’re entering a new ice age!”
Is that judgment any more sage?

From a distance I hear ‘can you spare a dime?’
Can change hold off a life of crime?
Are my thoughts silly or sublime?
He nears, will I get off in time?
He’s probably just down on his luck,
What’s wrong if I give him a buck?
I’d help out a friend who is stuck,
Perhaps he won’t see me when I duck.
“Help out your fellow man,” we’re told
But people’s faces are stone cold–
“He’ll learn his lesson–all withhold!”
Am I to judge? Is that too bold?
Closer and closer ’spare a dime?’
Will my change change his life, or mine?
Are my thoughts silly or sublime?
He nears, will I get off in time?
A special thanks to Abe who helped with the editing.

For some, money is the big chase,
Morals, ethics not a problem as long as there is another bill in my suitcase.
Accumulate more and more you’ll win the race,
When they bury you with it, you’ll need a really big space.
Maybe the point is to help those without,
A community that jumps at once, when the distress call goes out.
No need to wait for the one with much clout,
Together, we’re unstoppable, we can fix anything no doubt.
Celebrate life, that’s worth more than a barrel of oil,
A new discovery, could make cancer recoil.
Could death be a culture for reclaiming soil?
Strange to think that’s why we were put on earth to toil.
Friends, family, children, acts of kindness deserve more of your time,
To your boss say, “It’s worth a lot more than your precious dime”.
The corporate ladder, a mountain I’d rather climb,
Do something meaningful, before you pass your prime.
